I’ve been pouring over my books and scouring the internet for first-person accounts from Communists during the Weimar period to give us a ground view of their experiences. Unfortunately I’ve been unable to find much substantial. This writer must admit the Nazi purges were quiet efficient at destroying records and silencing its members in the concentration camps. It saddens my soul so few of their own accounts survived.
Instead, I will use this opportunity to discuss the liberalization of Germany in the Weimar Era. Censorship of speech and expression was nonexistent. Workers were protected under the law. Cabarets were centers of political criticism. The Communists championed nearly all of this and demanded more reforms, more freedom, more protections from vulture that is big business.
